Nemanja Radulovići esimene loengu teema on "Oral-formulaic theory in South Slavic academia: 18-19th centuries" ja see toimub kolmapäeval, 26. aprillil algusega kell 16.15 von Bocki maja (Ülikooli 16) auditooriumis 214. Teine loeng kannab pealkirja "Oral-formulaic theory in South Slavic academia: 20th century" ja see toimub neljapäeval, 27. aprillil algusega kell 12.15 von Bocki maja (Ülikooli 16) auditooriumis 212.
Loengute tutvustus:
Oral-formulaic theory of oral poetry as founded by Classical scholars Milman Parry and Albert B. Lord is undoubtedly one of the most influental approaches to the phenomenon of oral tradition in the 20th century. The basis of the theory was the comparison of Homeric works to living epic singing of Southern Slavs. Such comparisons interested the researchers within South Slavic academic community since late 18th century. In the lecture, an overview of such comparisons will be offered. Scholars’ approaches towards Homeric question (epos versus cycles debate), however, often went beyond academic confines into general cultural debates, as spurred by Romanticism (creation of a national epic). In the late 19th century, new fieldwork offered new insights, moving from textual work toward the problem of a singer’s creative process and memorization and becoming thus the predecessor of oral-formulaic theory.
Before M. Parry and A.B.Lord started their fieldwork as a kind of experimental test for Homeric question, concepts very similar to oral formulaic theory had been the topic of research for the scholars dedicated to South Slavic epic singing. The first among them, Matija Murko, through his fieldwork noticed what would be called multiform. German philologists who combined historico-literary approach with work among contemporary singers proposed the ideas that can be seen not only as predecessors of Parry-Lord theory, but, perhaps, as a kind of an alternative model. Finally, the reception of oral-formulaic theory among researchers in former Yugoslavia was not devoid of criticism. We will try to present some of the critical views and different approaches to the epic traditon and theoretical questions on formula.
